I’m b ack at work after 7 weeks away. The server room downtown flooded over the weekend so we don’t have any computer access and 90% of our phones are down. Needless to say it’s a little chaotic. But everyone, including the drivers, are helping out and we’re muddling through it all. I came in a few hours early, but apparently my boss was calling at 0300 to get me in sooner; I got to sleep around 0200 hence the reason I ignored her earlier calls...
I’m sweating and want to vomit, but that’s just a normal day and not necessarily work related. Thankfully we have more staff coming in over the next few hours so we should be OK. What a way to return!..

That’s an exciting day back...
Years ago a had a conversation with my then-CEO about how we’d recover if we used sprinklers in the server room and they went off. I did not think recovery was going to be quick and easy, but I’d still rather have that water than flood water.

I’ve been there when I worked in IT, 3 days in a row with minimal breaks, just to get back to normal. I do not envy that crew right now...

Sprinklers? That’s a no-go. Why not Halon or CO2? Or was this just a hypothetical with someone that didn’t know about this stuff.
One place I worked at had a huge backup generator for the building, near my server room, but it was setup up to start using AC line power. Uh, how is that going to work?

Yeah he just didn’t know, and presumably had seen that sprinklers were a lot cheaper. He figured out it was a terrible idea once I explained to him what a recovery from watering your computers would look like.
